The stars aligned on a cool Thursday evening as the Divas prepared to meet the
. No telescope was necessary to see the constellations tonight. We were focused on the task at hand, mirroring their every move, as sharp as the lens on Mr. Locke’s glasses.
The Comets zoomed to their positions as the Divas tapped the opening kick and the game was on! It was evident early that these teams were evenly matched - most of the play remained at midfield and scoring chances were few for either side. Cat stood strong in goal against distant challenges and recorded 6 saves in the first half. We had several good chances that were turned away by the Comet defense until Caroline took a ball deep in the left corner and started to work her magic. She cleanly beat a defender towards the end line, cut back towards the middle and burned the back of the net with a left-footed strike. GOAL!! 1-0 Divas at halftime.
Play continued to be even into the second half highlighted by Tiana’s defensive headers to deny Comet attackers. Then a high-bounding ball got over our defense and eluded our goalie to tie the score.
Late in the second half with the score tied, a ball rolled dangerously close to our goal box and Sarah (7 saves) strayed barely beyond the area to grab the ball. The resulting free kick glanced off of the wall and trickled into the goal just beyond her reach. 2-1 Comets.
With 3 and 1/2 minutes left, lightning struck somewhere in Candler County and Chatham County officials decided to clear all of the fields and cancel the rest of the games. It was the right decision, but unfortunately it cost us the opportunity to tie the score or perhaps win with late goals. It was a bitter defeat because coach Sean, coach Chris and I agreed that we had the better chances, but the score was in their favor. We will have a chance for vengeance in the last game of the regular season when we will meet the Comets again.
Final score - Comets 2 Diamond Divas 1
